Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) has a long tradition as a medicinal plant and has been used for centuries throughout the world. It is a common plant found throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Today, multiple trials have exhibited the efficacy and safety of comfrey in topical applications for pain, inflammation and swelling of joints, for symptomatic relief of arthritic conditions, sprains, bruises, strains and wound care. Comfrey's therapeutic properties are derived from it's anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Comfrey promotes healthy skin regeneration with its high mucilage and allantoin content creating a moisturizing, soothing ointment that promotes cell production. Although our ancestors used comfrey in internal applications, it should not be taken internally in this day and age as it has been found to absorb potentially toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can damage liver tissue. Although safe for topical application, I would avoid any application on infants and young children.
Comfrey has a rich history in folklore, and has always been thought to be a great healer. Since 400 BCE, notable Greek physicians cultivated comfrey for its wonderful healing powers and is associated with the Greek Goddess Hecate. In Europe, it was known as the 'bone knit' herb and believed to have a power to heal fractured bones. The Celts considered it a sacred herb, and used it in healing practices and as an offering to the Goddess Brigid. Native Americans used comfrey in various medicinal applications and for healing rituals. Comfrey was treasured as a valuable herb in traditional Chinese medicine for its healing attributes. In Slavic tradition, comfrey was used in association with protection, fertility, and used in love spells and charms.
